Hospitals and health centres have important obligations in the struggle to reduce the use of tobacco and its harmful effects on health. These obligations include the establishment of active support for smokers in their quitting process.
This concerns patients/clients as well as all the categories of the staff. In order to turn hospitals leaders in tobacco control, it is necessary to carry out a global action which involves the whole organization.
The Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) has designed an intervention model taking into account the organization, group and individual factors which favour and reinforce the ‘Smoke free Hospital’ project based on the ENSH guide. Such model has been implemented successfully in other Catalan hospitals and it has boosted actions in smoking control in the centres.
